Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Tutus

General

What is Tutus?
Tutus is a lightweight Windows desktop application that lets you lock any app on your PC with a master password. Whether it's your browser, messaging apps, or work tools — Tutus ensures only you can access them.
Is Tutus free?
Yes, Tutus is completely free to download and use.
What versions of Windows does Tutus support?
Tutus supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 (64-bit).
Does Tutus require an internet connection?
No. Tutus works entirely offline. Your password and settings are stored locally on your device — nothing is sent to any server.
Where is my data stored?
All configuration and password data is stored locally in your user profile (%LOCALAPPDATA%\Tutus). Tutus never transmits any data over the internet.

Setup & Usage

How do I set up Tutus for the first time?
After installation, Tutus will ask you to create a master password. This is the only password you need to remember — it's used to unlock all your protected apps.
How do I add an app to the protected list?
Open the Tutus dashboard, click "Add App", and browse for the application you want to protect. You can also select from currently running apps.
What happens when someone tries to open a protected app?
Tutus instantly hides the app window, freezes the process, and displays a password prompt. The app cannot be seen or used until the correct password is entered.
Can I change my master password?
Yes. Open the Tutus dashboard and click "Change Password". You'll need to enter your current password before setting a new one.
Does Tutus keep running when I close the dashboard?
Yes. Closing the dashboard window minimizes Tutus to the system tray. It continues monitoring and protecting your apps in the background. You can reopen the dashboard anytime by double-clicking the tray icon.
Does Tutus start automatically with Windows?
Yes, by default. You can toggle this from the dashboard using the "Start with Windows" checkbox.

App Compatibility

Which apps can Tutus protect?
Tutus works with most standard Windows desktop applications — browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox), productivity tools (Word, Excel, VS Code), media players, games, and more.
Does Tutus work with WhatsApp?
Tutus has limited support for the WhatsApp Desktop app. Because WhatsApp runs as a UWP/MSIX packaged app and never fully closes (it stays in the system tray), Tutus may not consistently detect when it's reopened. We're actively working on improving support for apps like WhatsApp in future updates. For the best results, we recommend using WhatsApp Web through a protected browser (like Chrome or Edge) instead.
Does Tutus work with PWA (Progressive Web Apps)?
Yes! Tutus can detect PWAs installed through Chrome or Edge (like Telegram Web, WhatsApp Web, etc.) by scanning window titles. Simply add the browser or the PWA to your protected list.
Can Tutus protect Microsoft Store (UWP) apps?
Support for UWP/MSIX apps is limited in the current version. Standard desktop (Win32) applications work best. Improved UWP support is planned for future releases.
Can I protect system apps like File Explorer?
No. Tutus automatically blocks system-critical processes (Explorer, Task Manager, etc.) from being added to prevent Windows from becoming unusable.

Security

How secure is the password storage?
Your master password is never stored in plain text. Tutus uses SHA-256 hashing with a unique salt, so even if someone accesses the config file, they cannot recover your password.
Can someone bypass Tutus using Task Manager?
Tutus freezes protected processes at the OS level, making them unresponsive even if accessed through Task Manager. However, an advanced user with admin privileges could theoretically terminate the Tutus process itself. For maximum security, use Tutus alongside a Windows user account without admin rights.
What happens if I forget my master password?
Currently, there is no password recovery option. You would need to manually delete the config file at %LOCALAPPDATA%\Tutus\tutus_config.json and set up a new password. Note: this will also clear your protected apps list.

Troubleshooting

Tutus isn't locking an app after I restarted my PC. Why?
After a PC restart or sleep/wake cycle, Tutus automatically resumes monitoring. If an app isn't being locked, try removing it from the protected list and adding it again.
I see ghost windows in Alt+Tab (like "NotifyIcon" or "GDI+ Window"). What are these?
These are internal helper windows used by the system tray icon. Tutus automatically hides them, but in rare cases they may briefly appear. They're harmless and should disappear on their own.
The installer was flagged by my antivirus. Is Tutus safe?
Yes. Because Tutus uses process-level operations (freezing/unfreezing) and runs at startup, some antivirus software may flag it as suspicious. This is a false positive. Tutus is open-source and contains no malicious code. You may need to add an exception in your antivirus settings.
How do I completely uninstall Tutus?
Use "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows Settings, or run the uninstaller from the Start Menu. This removes all program files, registry entries, and local data.
